High-frequency words
Did you know that just 100 words make up 50% of the English words native speakers use everyday, and 1000 make up over 80%?

High-frequency words are shown here in red text. These are mainly taken from the Oxford 3000 list of high-frequency words with some minor changes.

In addition, when you use the MacMillan dictionary, you will see that words in the top 7000 are shown in red.

Which online dictionary?

(1) Dictionaries for students of English
The
MacMillan online dictionary is easily the best online dictionary for students at the present time.
Features include audio, phonetic script, different forms of the word, examples, related words (e.g. economy - economist - economic), synonyms, American and British variants and high-frequency words (shown in red).
I have not found another dictionary that gives students so much information.

The
Cambridge dictionary is good as a back up - It is sometimes helpful to look at two dictionary definitions.

(2) Dictionaries for all users
There are two good online dictionaries for native speakers which can also be useful for students: Wiktionary and Dictionary.com

Wiktionary is related to Wikipedia and has user-contributed definitions. The pages are fairly simple and the derived words and related words sections show other members of the word family - e.g. For 'science' you will see 'scientist', 'scentific' under derived or related words.

Dictionary.com - a US-based online dictionary for general users. The definitions can be difficult to understand sometimes but it's good for back up.

Use the word search box You can search for any word in these four dictionaries plus Wikipedia as well, by entering the word in the Dictionary search box at the top of every page of Studypage.net.
